Rick Riordan's original Percy Jackson series stands as one of my main literary cornerstones. Deciding to read the series that came after, per the suggestion from a great friend of mine, was one of the best decisions I made this summer. Not only did I get to return to Riordan's wildly entertaining world of Greek mythology in modern culture, but revisit beloved characters and meet new ones that are faced with enemies bigger and more powerful than ever before. I immediately loved the three main characters for their very unique personalities and abilities that aid them on the quest they must complete to prevent the earth and its giants from awakening and destroying the entire world. I absolutely love takes on Greek mythology that connect to real world events or anomalies, and Riordan definitely seems to be the king of writing stories with just the right mix of fantasy and reality. My favorite part (which differs from the main focus in the original series) is definitely the incorporation of Roman mythology and its inevitable connection to that of the Greeks; it's a take on history that works so well to create tension in this story and leave me on the edge of my seat. I was literally on my seat's edge with countless chills reading the last page and finally getting to the jaw dropping revelation about one of the main mysteries of the novel. I am not sure how I feel about the blooming romance between Jason and Piper at this point and feel like it may take an unexpected turn...I guess I'll just have to keep reading to see if my suspicions about another character's role are correct! Overall, this series is my latest obsession: I bought a box set on Amazon a couple of minutes ago that will be here tomorrow so I can start the next book (that certainly has Percy Jackson in it :) One of my favorite quotes from The Lost Hero: "Love is powerful, Piper. It can bring even the gods to their knees."
