Quite unlike my usual methods of reading, I viewed the movie version of this novel before reading the novel itself. All of my friends read this book at its peak of newfound attention and popularity when I could never seem to get around to reading it myself. I finally got around to it, and, as I find virtually every time, the book was better than the movie. I really enjoyed the simple and short syntax used by the author. Her use of short sentences and limited description really allow her readers to find for themselves images of her characters and the dystopian world she has created. These characters and settings erect a very exciting tale of how a world focused on dominant traits runs. The undeniable human truth that difference and individuality can be unsettling and virtually destructive motivates the actions of the characters deemed 'Divergent,' or unconventional, in this novel. Readers follow Beatrice, or the reformed Tris, as she discovers new truths about herself, the society she has always accepted, and the political unrest just around the corner. I strongly recommend this book to lovers of The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and other such similar book series. Some of my favorite quotes from Divergent: "We believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another." "'I might be in love with you.' He smiles a little. 'I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though.'" "I have a theory that selflessness and bravery aren't all that different." "Fear doesn't shut you down; it wakes you up." "A brave man acknowledges the strength of others." "Sometimes, the best way to help someone is just to be near them." "... there is power in self-sacrifice."
