This book was popular back when I was in middle school, but I never actually followed the trend and read it. Upon seeing it and the rest of the series on a shelf at Barnes and Noble a week or so ago, I decided I should finally give it a try. And I am sure glad that I did! I have read Kiera Cass' The Siren and thoroughly enjoyed it, and the same goes for this novel. I was blown away by the simple yet poignant descriptions, unpredictable plot, and varying characters. It possesses the classic themes of love in the middle of unforeseen circumstances and learning to live and love where you find yourself in life. I was agonized by the cliffhanger the book leaves its readers on, but am anticipatory of starting the next addition to the series, The Elite, very soon. The story follows America Singer, a girl in a world divided by castes ranging from One to Eight. Born as a Five, she finds herself with the opportunity to become the wife of a One - Prince Maxon, the soon-to-be-ruler of the whole country searching for a wife via a competition know as the Selection. Amidst this opportunity for a more comfortable life and a royal husband, America already has a lover of which castes keep her from being with. The novel paints the struggle for America to find who she is in the palace she now calls home while confronting the feelings she has for her former love and the prince, who has become a new interest. Again, I really enjoyed this book and look forward to continue reading to find out how the story ends! Some of my Favorite Quotes from The Selection: "True love is usually the most inconvenient kind." "It's always the fear of looking stupid that stops you from being awesome." "You get confused by crying women, I get confused by walks with princes." "
