Revelation 3:20
By: Meghan Coley
“I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”
I imagine myself looking up from a task that has my attention as I hear a knock at the door of my room. A resonating knock that seems to come from the inside of my head. I look to the door and can sense that there is someone on the other side. I hesitate, and then suddenly I’m standing up and walking towards it as if someone pushed the fast forward button on a remote.
My hand hovers over the doorknob, and the knock sounds again, softer than before and patient, but persistent. The person whispers my name faintly, and I open the door.
There stands Jesus, in casual clothes, holding two bowls of my favorite meal: chicken alfredo pasta with broccoli. He smiles and I step aside to let him in, forgetting about my task and eager to spend time with him.
We sit at the table, and Jesus asks me about my day. I am completely honest, pouring out my friendship troubles, academic struggles, and everything in between. He listens patiently, nodding and giving me his full attention.
When I am finished, I am in tears. He simply opens his arms and I embrace him. He whispers against my hair unintelligibly, but I am comforted all the same. I pull away, my peace renewed. I am thankful that He has come to spend his time with me. And we eat, enjoying each other’s company as close friends.
This imaginative scene was inspired by my reaction to the scripture above. I began to see the images from the verse’s description, like it was a story playing out in my head. So I decided to write it out.
This description is what I aspire for my relationship with Christ to be as each day goes by. I feel like at the moment I am not best friends with Jesus; but we are getting there. You can’t make a best friend without setting aside time to emotionally bond and trust. Because of this, I pray over the time I get to spend with him, that my soul would yearn for quiet moments to devote to prayer and conversation with him. I pray that when I hear his voice, I would respond and open the door, that I would let him into my mind’s darkest corners and confide all of my good and bad experiences and thoughts with him. I pray for a developed friendship and love, and for a perseverance to seek him when the things of this world are loud and distracting.
I thank him for consistently standing at my door and knocking.
