you're my dearest friend
By: Meghan Coley
I loathed him when he left for college,
Leaving me behind in our little corner of the world
While he saw and learned about everything that lay beyond.
Part of me wanted to be invited.
But now he has returned.
And now he has offered me a different invitation.
I wonder how I didn’t see this coming.
“Teddy, please don’t ask me.”
His hands were on my cheeks.
They drop along with his eyes.
And while I loathed him
He wanted me to love him.
And while I do love him,
I just can’t go and be his wife.
I don’t think I believe him when
He tells me I’ll find another
And live
And die
For him.
He says he knows me, and he does.
And I’ve pushed him back, but don’t want this to be
What pulls him away forever.
